For many, the holidays come with a few extra kilograms. And Easter is no exception, with many of its traditions revolving around chocolate. But how many Easter eggs do you have to eat to gain a kilogram?

Previous research shows that the Dutch eat about 47 Easter eggs per year, on average. That’s not enough to move the scale, dietitian Mary Stottelaar, affiliated with puurgezond.nl, told Hart van Nederland.

“It is about the total amount you eat in a day. If you devour bags of Easter eggs, well, then you will gain weight. But if you eat a normal amount of eggs, you really won’t see that reflected on the scale immediately,” Stottelaar said.

A chocolate Easter egg contains about 45 calories on average. You have to eat approximately 7,000 calories to gain one kilogram. That amounts to 155 Easter eggs. So don’t worry too much about indulging. “You also have to let loose very now and then.”

If you are counting calories, Stottelaar has a few tips for keeping them as low as possible without avoiding Easter eggs altogether. “The safest option is to go for the dark chocolate Easter eggs. Dark chocolate contains the least sugar. And if you feel that you have indulged too much during the Easter holidays, ensure you have healthy meals again in the days that follow and eat as little as possible in between meals.”

Taking some time for moving your body is also always a good idea, she added. “We eat and sit more than usual during the Easter holidays, so if you have a chance to move around a bit more, it is good for your body.”
