In as little as 15 minutes — and by doing just one overhead squat, you can start on a path toward moving more effectively.
GreatLIFE Golf & Fitness has introduced Kinotek technology — a three-dimensional camera system that started in a physical therapy setting and now is offered as part of assessing fitness.
“You’ll receive an objective movement score and then personalized corrective exercises to strengthen certain muscles or work on mobility in certain areas where there are joints that need to be stabilized to help you move better,” said Randall Hill, vice president of fitness.
“For young athletes, it can improve sports performance and create better lifelong movement patterns, and for the everyday user, it can help avoid injury and help make sure what you’re doing is supporting healthy movement. It’s another avenue along with focusing on strength training, cardio and nutrition to really help people.”
Fitness trainer Ryan Etherington has seen the results firsthand.
“There’s a lot of benefits with Kinotek,” he said. “There are a lot of small things we don’t realize in our everyday movement that we can improve upon.”
That makes the system effective for anyone — from those just beginning to work on their fitness level to those who have focused on it for years.
“Our movement is never really perfect, so it always gives us a tool to use,” Etherington said.
“For people who go to the gym on a regular basis and are hitting their goals, it gives something else to work on, and it’s really a cool piece of technology that tells us which muscles are tight, which need to be strengthen or mobilized and how a workout program can be based off your unique needs. It’s definitely good for all levels.”
With one overhead squat, the Kinotek system can assess movement patterns and create an assessment.
“It takes about 15 minutes for the whole process, you wear normal workout clothing, and we can instantly show you what the report shows,” Etherington said.
Members can even see the difference before and after they go through a warmup.
“We’ve seen warmups improve a score by 10 to 15 points, so it shows why that warmup is important,” Etherington said. “And then after two or three weeks, we’ve seen numbers improve drastically.”
Kinotek is available at Performance Center and GreatLIFE Golf & Fitness at the Avera McKennan Fitness Center.
“It’s easy to figure out and free for members to use,” Hill said. “A trainer will go through it with you, and if you decide to use it for a customized program, there is a fee, but just seeing how you move can be a tool that really helps people. It’s an objective way to show what puts you at higher risk for injury, and then as you train, you can reassess your score and see the progression.”
A trainer is able to explain which muscles are identified in the report and how they relate to daily activity, Etherington said.
“We tie your goals back to everyday movement,” he added. “We might talk to someone who wants to be able to play with their grandkids, and we see from the overhead squat how we can fix some issues and allow them to get off the ground better. It ties back to real-world examples depending on your goals.”
At least once or twice a day, a GreatLIFE member tends to use the system, he added.
Before or after their workout, members at Performance Center now also can add access to a new Recovery Lounge featuring a sauna and cold plunge tanks for contrast therapy.
“It just opened in the last week, and everyone is really excited about it,” Etherington said.
Members have the option to include Recovery Lounge access with their membership, which also will allow them to use GreatLIFE’s other Recovery Lounges at Harrisburg and Woodlake. Those offer Hydromassage beds and Hyperice products, including compression therapy, percussion massage devices, vibrating foam rollers and vibrating Hyperspheres.
