A woman is going viral for a bizarre beauty mishap.
On January 30, Gabriela Mendes, 25, took to social media after it appeared that one of her moles had spontaneously fallen off.
“Y’all I’m at the gym and one of my beauty marks literally just fell off my face,” she wrote over an Instagram Reel. In the video, the Auckland, New Zealand, native showed the spot on her left cheek where the mole was missing.
“What is happening?????” she captioned the post.
“I also have an identical one on my right cheek, and I’ve had them my whole life, so I noticed straight away when one was gone,” Mendes tells PEOPLE.
The content creator recalls being “caught off guard” by the incident. “I was working out, went to the bathroom, looked in the mirror, and realized it just wasn’t there anymore,” she says. “It honestly caught me off guard. I’ve never heard of anything like that.”
Mendes adds that she was “shocked” when she made the discovery. “I thought, ‘What the hell just happened?’ I even started wondering if it had been a blackhead this whole time and I somehow never realized.”
Mendes decided not to seek medical attention and instead turned to the internet for answers. She quickly found out that she is not the first to experience a mole falling off.
“Wait this legit happened to me and I thought I was just gaslighting myself into thinking it had been a mole 😭,” one user commented.
“I had a mole for 16 years and it one day just fell off and it scarred over,” said another.
Others shared that they had moles fall off, only for them to later return.
“It’s gunna grow back lol i’ve done this twice w the same one 😂,” said one commenter.
Another said, “I have on right under my eye that fall off once but it came back. A little freaky when it happens for sure.”
Mendes tells PEOPLE that she was comforted by the responses. “I really didn’t want my beauty mark to be gone forever, so seeing people share similar experiences was reassuring,” she says.

Luckily, Mendes’ beauty mark has since come back.
“It took a few weeks to start reappearing, it looked a bit like a scab and was hollow in the middle at first,” she says. “Now it seems to be filling in again and almost looks back to normal, just a bit more faint.”
