MIDDLETOWN, Conn. (WFSB) – Hundreds of runners laced up and hit the streets in Middletown on Sunday morning for a day of fitness, family and fun.

The Middletown 10K and 5K run or walk, hosted by the Hartford Marathon Foundation, brought out people of all ages.

For Nicole Ramos, the race was a big moment.

“This is my first time running a 5K,” Ramos said.

Ramos made the trip from New Jersey with her 12-year-old daughter Sophia, who has been right by her side every step of the way.

“I helped her run outside when it was freezing out,” Sophia Gonzalez said.

The two are among about 1,300 participants in the event.

Kids race included

Four-year-old Ollie proved you don’t have to be big to be part of the race.

“I’m running in the race,” Ollie said.

Kids ages 2 to 11 could choose their own race between a quarter-mile and half-mile run. Every runner who crossed the finish line received a medal.

“We have about 50 to 100 kids. It’s a beautiful day,” said Josh Miller, president of the Hartford Marathon Foundation.

Charity component

Beyond the races, organizers also encouraged runners to give back, collecting nonperishable food donations for the community.

One returning group raised more than $60,000 to support Gilead Community Services, which helps people with mental health needs in Middlesex County.
