Homs, April 15 (SANA) The Second International Scientific Conference on Nutrition opened Wednesday at Homs University, bringing together academics and experts from Syria and several countries under the theme “Our Food, Our Medicine.”

Organized by the Faculty of Health Sciences in cooperation with the Syrian American Nutrition Society, the two-day conference addresses topics including child and sports nutrition, dietary management of obesity and chronic diseases, and strategies to enhance public health awareness.

President of Homs University, Dr. Tareq Hosam Al-Deen, said the conference reflects the growing need for advanced scientific approaches to nutrition amid rising global health challenges, particularly the spread of chronic diseases. He noted the university’s focus on supporting research, strengthening professional capacities and expanding cooperation with international institutions.

The event includes four scientific sessions featuring around 25 lectures delivered by specialists from countries including Germany, the United Kingdom, France, Turkey, India, Jordan, Egypt and Sweden. Discussions focus on linking research with community needs and advancing preventive and therapeutic health strategies.

Participants also highlighted efforts to train healthcare workers, noting plans to qualify more than 18,000 personnel across medical fields, including nutrition, as part of broader initiatives to improve healthcare services.

Sessions will also address emerging topics such as the use of artificial intelligence in food science, modern approaches to obesity treatment and clinical nutrition practices.

An accompanying exhibition showcases specialized products, including allergen-free and sugar-free foods, as well as medical equipment designed for nutritional and surgical use.
