Mats and Mimosas brings Pilates, brunch to Edwardsville

Mats and Mimosas sounds like a great event, and dozens of Edwardsville-area residents agreed as they took part in a morning of exercise, brunch and cocktails on May 2 at The Ink House.

The morning began with an energizing workout led by Jet Set Pilates followed by a brunch spread from Food Dude. The workout and brunch were followed by drinks as participants enjoyed mimosas, Bloody Marys and other morning cocktails.

“I love it, it’s like somebody read my diary,” said Elizabeth Bielic, of St. Jacob, as she sipped a post-exercise mimosa. “These are two of my favorite things, exercise and sipping beverages. You burn the calories and then you put some more back in, they balance each other out.”

Christina Kasting, of Holiday Shores, who was enjoying a mimosa with Bielic, agreed that Mats and Mimosas made perfect sense.

“You raise your heart rate with exercise and you bring it back down again with a drink,” Kasting said. “Everything is right with the world.”

Two Southern Illinois University Edwardsville students from Galesburg were among the women who took part in Mats and Mimosas.

“I think this is really fun and it gives us an opportunity to relax from school,” said Jacqueline Hershkowitz. “A workout, breakfast and a mimosa is a great way to spend the morning.”

Hershkowitz’s friend and fellow student, Jordyn Oeth, agreed.

“Right now we are in the middle if finals week so it’s a good break from studying,” Oeth said. “We can take it a little bit easy, at least for the morning.”

The 50-minute Pilates session was held on the outdoor patio, and then participants rolled up their mats and went inside for the pastries and drinks. Mats and Mimosas took place in the historic Ink House building, once home to the Intelligencer newspaper.
