Lt. Governor Jim Tressel announces return of Team Tressel Fitness Challenge for 2026

Ohio Lt. Governor Jim Tressel today announced the return of the Team Tressel Fitness Challenge for the fall 2026 school year, with registration now open for schools across the state. The 30-day program will officially begin on August 31, 2026.

Ohio schools serving students in grades 3–8 can sign up now at TeamTressel.Ohio.gov.

Since its launch, the initiative has reached more than 391,000 students in over 1,300 schools across all 88 Ohio counties. The program aims to help students develop healthy habits early, as nearly one in three high school students nationwide is considered overweight or obese.

“It’s been incredible to see students take ownership of their future and get excited about building healthy habits,” said Lt. Governor Tressel. “Just as important, we’re seeing students develop an attitude of gratitude by recognizing their progress, encouraging their classmates, and taking pride in the work they put in each day. Those habits can stay with them long after the challenge ends.”

The Team Tressel Fitness Challenge is a flexible, school-friendly program that promotes physical activity, nutrition, sleep, and SMART goal-setting. Students progress at their own pace using grade-specific workbooks that can be completed during the school day or at home.

“We are proud to partner with Lt. Governor Tressel to bring this challenge back to Ohio schools,” said Ohio Department of Education and Workforce Director Stephen D. Dackin. “Setting and meeting goals around physical activity, nutrition, and sleep helps prepare students for success both in the classroom and in life. I encourage all schools, students, and families across the state to take this opportunity to work together toward a healthier future.”

The program also features a mentorship component through “Challenge Buddies,” which includes collegiate and professional athletes who visit participating schools to encourage students, share personal experiences, and model healthy lifestyles. “The best way to help students reach their full potential isn’t just telling them what to do, it’s doing it with them,” said Challenge Captain and NFL veteran Roy Hall Jr. “Being in schools with kids across Ohio—sweating, laughing, setting goals, building consistency, and making space for gratitude—has shown me that when students commit to healthy habits and focused routines, they don’t just get better, they start believing in what they’re capable of.”

By the end of the 30-day challenge, students will have developed foundational knowledge and routines in fitness and wellness that can support lifelong healthy living.
