When you think of supplements, you likely think of common options to support your health like Vitamin D, fish oil, and creatine. But these days, all sorts of under-the-radar supplements have gained traction for their potential performance and longevity benefits. Nick Green, the 41-year-old CEO of Thrive Market, is just one of the people currently taking a more expansive approach to supplementation.
“I take quite a few supplements—somewhere between 15 and 20—but I don’t take them all every day,” Green tells Men’s Journal. “I treat supplements a bit like food. I think variety is probably a good thing.”
It’s no surprise Green prioritizes longevity, considering his role as CEO of an online grocery company focused on organic, non-GMO, and health-conscious products. He also stays consistent with the nonnegotiable fundamentals like training, sleep, and a whole-food-based diet.
In his supplement cabinet, he leans on a handful of options to stay at peak health. Some are familiar staples, like creatine, probiotics, and omega-3s, while others are lesser-known picks, which he shares below.
CoQ10
CoQ10 is a compound the body naturally produces, supporting cellular energy production and acting as an antioxidant. Research has found that CoQ10 supplementation may be an effective adjunctive method in reducing systolic blood pressure, especially at doses below 200 milligrams a day.
Herbal Teas
Green only has one cup of coffee a day, covering his caffeine intake for the day. The rest of the day, he relies on herbal teas, which boast a range of health benefits, depending on the type. For instance, peppermint tea can help ease digestion, while ginger tea may support gut health and reduce inflammation.
“My favorite supplement is actually a beverage,” Green says. “At the Thrive offices, I’ll probably have 10 different herbal and medicinal tea bags each day—all bought on Thrive! It’s an easy way to get micronutrients and antioxidants that you won’t necessarily find in food, and it keeps me hydrated at the same time.”
Beetroot Extract
Beetroot extract has frequently been labeled as nature’s pre-workout, touted for its endurance-boosting benefits. It’s rich in nitrates, which your body converts into nitric oxide, a molecule that helps relax blood vessels and improve circulation. Ultimately, this enhances endurance-heavy exercise by increasing oxygen delivery to muscles.
Urolithin A
Urolithin A is produced from compounds found in foods like pomegranates, recently gaining attention for its role in cellular health. It helps stimulate mitophagy, the process of clearing out damaged mitochondria and recycling them into more efficient ones. This can support muscle function and healthy aging.
Aged Garlic
Widely studied for its cardiovascular benefits, aged garlic can help support healthy blood pressure and improve cholesterol levels alike. It may also support immune function, thanks to its anti-inflammatory properties.
Pine Bark Extract
Pine bark extract contains antioxidants called proanthocyanidins, which help reduce inflammation, support blood flow, and protect against oxidative stress. It’s commonly used to support heart health and cognitive function by enhancing blood flow to the brain.
