C–beauty, shorthand for Chinese beauty, is moving beyond niche fascination and into something much more influential.
For the uninitiated, think of it as K–beauty’s more flamboyant, more experimental cousin who has crashed the party: all hyper–engineered formulas, digitally native trends and packaging so good it borders on collectable. And honestly, it was inevitable. China has one of the most sophisticated beauty markets in the world, driven by intensely engaged consumers, rapid product development, and an e–commerce ecosystem that moves faster than much of the West.
The Douyin aesthetic
You cannot talk about Chinese beauty without talking about Douyin, China’s version of TikTok, where many of the movement’s defining aesthetics were born. Its influence has already seeped into global beauty culture, visible in glossy gradient lips, ultra–precise lashes, and skin lit to almost implausible levels.
Unlike the heavy sculpting long associated with Western glam, the aesthetic centres on doll–like radiance: manhua lashes, highlighted aegyo–sal, blurred lips and high–shine, dimensional textures built to perform on camera. Crucially, Douyin makeup and C–beauty evolved in tandem, with brands developing products specifically to create the look.
