City College will be hosting “The Becoming Experience,” a wellness and photography event scheduled to take place from 2:30 p.m. to 4:40 p.m. on Wednesday, May 13.
The event will take place in room 180 of the Administration building located on East Campus. Attendees can expect a combination of general wellness advice and creativity. There will be a photography event with portraits and personal stories from City College students.
The event is hosted in collaboration with The WELL, DSPS, UMOJA, the Veterans Support and Resource Center, and the Office of Student Life.
Students were picked by Associate Dean Christopher Johnson for the growth and resilience that they showed, which could then be turned into a showcase to encourage other students. The selected participants represent a range of backgrounds and experiences, with their stories intended to highlight personal challenges, achievements, and ongoing journeys.
The goal of the event is to promote mental wellness, provide students with restorative spaces to reflect on personal growth, reduce mental health stigma, highlight art, healing, and mental wellness, and create opportunities for students.
“The Becoming Experience was inspired by a deep desire to create an interactive experience where students feel truly seen, valued, and empowered in their personal journeys.” WELL Program adviser Rebecca Bean said.
By combining visual storytelling with wellness-focused elements, organizers aim to create an environment where attendees can connect with others’ experiences while also considering their own growth.
“I hope “The Becoming Experience” offers students a sense of healing, empowerment, and belonging,” Bean said. “Through creative expression, particularly photography and reflective practices, students can explore their identities, process emotions, and tell their stories in ways that feel authentic and affirming.”
Organizers aim for the space to function as both an exhibit and an experience, where attendees are not only viewing the work but also engaging with its themes in a meaningful way.
“We hope that the portraits reflect the diversity and intersectionality of our SBCC students. We also hope that students see the value and the power in seeking help and using resources,” DSPS coordinator Jana Garnett said. “Every year we work collaboratively to create events that promote mental wellness and to highlight our support services for students.”
The event is open to students interested in engaging with both wellness resources and creative expression, offering a space that combines elements of an exhibit with opportunities for reflection.
