Bryan wellness center emphasizes mental health care during awareness month

BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) – This segment on The Three was paid for and sponsored by Sagebriar Wellness Center.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and Sagebriar Wellness Center in Bryan is highlighting why taking care of mental health is an important part of overall wellness.

Dr. Steve Beatty, clinical director and licensed professional counselor-supervisor at Sagebriar, said communities have made progress in raising awareness about mental health in recent years, but challenges persist.

“We’re still in a very high pressure era,” Beatty said. “So what we’re seeing is people who have typically been resilient, they’re actually struggling. There’s a lot of burnout going on, political, economic, social unrest.”

Beatty said mental health needs to be treated with the same importance as physical health.

“I think we need to start normalizing mental health. It needs to be as important as physical health,” he said.

Sagebriar Wellness Center specializes in psychological trauma rather than traditional talk therapy. The center uses specific modalities to address trauma, including eye movement desensitization and reprocessing, brain spotting, emotional transformation therapy, immediate stabilization procedure, internal family systems and microcurrent neurofeedback.

Beatty explained that when a traumatic event occurs, everyone experiences a startle response known as acute stress reaction. Most people recover within three days, but 20% to 30% remain stuck in that elevated state.

Those who remain in a dysregulated state after three days may develop PTSD within 30 days to six months, Beatty said. The modalities used at Sagebriar address the root cause of trauma.

Beatty said people should consider seeking therapy when their coping mechanisms become more difficult and they notice increased isolation, pervasive sadness or anxiety.

“As you see yourself getting there and you realize it’s not making a difference, that’s a really good time to reach out and ask for help,” he said.

Sagebriar Wellness Center specializes in developmental disturbances, PTSD and complex trauma, including associated symptoms of stress, anxiety, panic attacks, depression, obsessions, compulsions, anger, fear, depersonalization, derealization, addictions, self-harm, relational behaviors, mood, personality, thought and dissociative disorders.
