Sebring Library to host bingo-based elderly fitness program

Mahoning County Public Health will launch a new health promotion program in June that uses the game of bingo to encourage physical activity and fall prevention among older adults.

The program, known as Bingocize, is scheduled to begin June 8 at the Sebring Library. Sessions will be held twice per week on Mondays and Wednesdays for 10 weeks. Each class runs from 11 a.m. to noon and combines range of motion, balance, and muscle strengthening exercises with health education questions.

Bingocize is an evidence-based program designed to help sedentary adults maintain mobility and independence. Research indicates that older adults are more likely to participate in health programs that are interactive and socially engaging. By strategically inserting exercises into a traditional bingo game, the program aims to reduce the risk of falling while providing a social setting for participants.

According to program materials, the workshops focus on several health areas, including nutrition and falls prevention. Participants, often called Bingocizers, rest while bingo numbers are called and then perform specific exercises or answer health questions before the game continues.

Organizers report that the program is adaptable for various physical ability levels. National data suggests that falls among adults 65 and older result in more than $50 billion in annual health care costs. Programs like Bingocize are intended to address these risks by improving upper and lower body strength and increasing health knowledge.

The Sebring Library is located at 195 W. Ohio St. While the program is free to the public, Mahoning County Public Health officials stated that pre-registration is required to attend.

Those interested in the program or seeking to register can contact the agency at 330-270-2855, extension 137.
