Pet wellness company pays $2.25M for Westport retail property

Two retail buildings in Westport recently sold for $2.25 million, property records show.

Wag Wellness LLC bought the buildings at 1046 Post Road East, including one that is 2,083 square feet and another totaling 3,110 square feet.

Wag Wellness is a California-based company that offers pet insurance, wellness plans and on-demand veterinary care. Attempts to reach the company were unsuccessful.

Legal 1031 EAT Holdings LLC said it is representing Wag Wellness as a temporary title holder in a reverse 1031 exchange, in which Wag is buying another property before selling the Westport site.

A 1031 exchange allows a property seller to defer capital gains taxes when proceeds from a sale are used to buy another property.

The seller was Millenium Brothers LLC, controlled by Andrew Shapiro, of Westport. It bought the property for $1.25 million in 2018.

The buildings sit on a 0.41-acre parcel and were built in 1920. They are appraised at $1.43 million and assessed at $998,400.
