5 Signs and Symptoms of Vitamin D Deficiency
Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that helps in the absorption of calcium, maintaining a balance of phosphate, and the fortifying of bone. It also helps to reduce inflammation, boost immune function and aid cell growth.
Although vitamin D is important to us, vitamin D deficiency is very common. Most people don’t realize that they are at risk for such deficiency. This is because the symptoms are generally subtle or insidious and we may not recognize them easily.
Here are 5 signs and symptoms of vitamin D deficiency:
Number 1: Weak bones and back pain
Vitamin D improves our body’s absorption of calcium that is a key building block of bones. A vitamin D deficiency may cause lower back pain, weaken the bones and make the bones more susceptible to hairline fractures.
Number 2: Frequent illnesses and infection
Vitamin D strengthens the antimicrobial peptide (A-M-P) in our immune cells and on mucosal surfaces. A-M-P rids our body of bacteria and viruses that can make us ill. The immune system relies on vitamin D to keep it healthy and robust.
Number 3: Muscle pain
Our muscles contain pain receptors called nociceptors that respond to different stimuli. A vitamin D deficiency results in a chemical stimulus that causes the nociceptors to send pain signals to our spinal cord or brain stem.
Number 4: Depression
Our body makes vitamin D when exposed to direct sunlight. Vitamin D helps our brain’s neurotransmitters produce serotonin, which affects our feelings of happiness. Lack of sun exposure and low levels of Vitamin D can contribute to depression.
Number 5: Hair Loss
Vitamin D stimulates hair follicles. Hair follicles are the tiny pores from which new hairs grow. Vitamin D deficiency has been linked to alopecia, the autoimmune condition that causes bald patches on the scalp and other areas of the body.
