1. Vitamin A
Vitamin A helps maintain good and clear vision. Having enough of it in your diet prevents xerophthalmia, a condition that results from vitamin A deficiency. Some foods that contain this vitamin include carrots, winter squash, spinach, and kale.
2. Omega-3 Fatty Acids
Omega-3 fatty acids are polyunsaturated fats found in eggs, margarine, yogurt, and soy milk, among others. They prevent eye diseases by producing more tears. Not getting enough omega-3 fatty acids may lead to dryness in your eyes and blurry vision. In addition, fatty acids are great in reducing inflammation.
3. Vitamin C
Studies show that an increased intake of vitamin C significantly lowers the risk of developing cataracts. Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant used to combat harmful free radicals. It also contributes to the production of collagen, a protein which provides structure to the eyes. You can get vitamin C from many citrus fruits and vegetables such as oranges, broccoli, and bell peppers.
4. Vitamin E
Similar to vitamin C, vitamin E is also an important antioxidant that fights cataracts, free radicals, and muscle degeneration. Foods like avocado, salmon, and almonds are rich in vitamin E.
5. Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin)
Studies show that the average person must consume 1.1 to 1.3 mg of riboflavin per day to lower the oxidation stress in the body, including the eyes. Vitamin B is a powerful oxidant similar to vitamins C and E. Beef, yogurt, oats, and milk are just some of the foods that contain Riboflavin.
