Stanley Perlman, MD, PhD, University of Iowa, “Mouse models for COVID-19 and CoV immune responses”
In this presentation, Dr. Perlman discussed the utilization of mouse models in studying Covid-19 immune responses in mice. Typically, mice are resistant to SARS-CoV-2 due to a spike protein incompatibility with mACE2. However, mife can be transduced with Ad5-hACE2. Infection of Ad5-hACE2 mice 5 days post-transduction led to a 20% weight loss after 4-6 days, as well as some slight amounts of edema. Clearance of SARS-CoV-2 is IFN- and STAT-1 dependent and relies on T-cell response. VRP immunization appears to be protective of an antibody response (VRP-S). Mice treated with remdesivir recover more quickly and viral load is lost sooner.
