This week has been all about Vitamin C Serum! I believe these 5 things are key to look for in a vitamin c serum particularly if you are using a retinol (or other forms of Vitamin A) and exfoliating acids. If you have sensitive skin, or sensitized skin from possibly over use of retinols, and acids yet still want the benefits of a vitamin c serum…this video talks about your options!

Check out my Part 1 in my Vitamin C Serum series.
MAKING YOU OWN DIY VITAMIN C SERUM? HERE’S WHY IT MAY NOT BE A GOOD IDEA

Here is a book that I love plowing into when I am in the mood for some skin science and ingredient knowledge:
‘The Principles and Practice of Antiaging Medicine for the Clinical Physician.’
(Pg 132-134 touches on the vitamin c ester ascorbyl palmitate for use on the skin/in cosmetics.)

Do not count out Vitamin C derivatives. It seems that it is quite possible that the percentage needed when using certain derivatives may be much less to reap those touted vitamin c benefits. There are plenty of medical professionals (as well as estheticians) that have seen with their own eyes (as I certainly have w/ myself as well as my clients) that they may very well be extremely affective. These derivatives certainly are much more well received by the skin decreasing side effects that through proven science… can actually cause the skin to react negatively ..one of which is through oxidative stress/free radical damage; yes, by using an unstable form of Vitamin C in your serum.

Stable forms of topical vitamin C include:
Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate (also a proven skin lightener to fade brown spots and discoloration from age, sun, breakouts, and hormones)
Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate (a popular choice as well)
Ascorbyl Methylsilanol Pectinate
Ascorbyl Palmitate (another well documented option as sourced above)
Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate (often used with fabulous results)
