URMC researchers are launching a new study to understand how the immune system responds to the COVID-19 infection, with the goal of determining how long someone is protected from reinfection once they have been exposed to the virus and recovered. This research has significant implications for the public health response to COVID-19, vaccine development, and the decisions related to the re-opening of the economy and society. The study will seek to recruit 100 people in the Rochester area who are COVID-19 positive and follow them for several months. The study is being supported with $5 million in funding from the National Institute for Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), the institute that is led by Dr. Anthony Fauci. Featuring: David Topham, Ph.D., Professor, URMC Department of Microbiology and Immunology, and Director, New York Influenza Center of Excellence; Angela Branche, M.D., Assistant Professor, Department of Medicine (Infectious Diseases), and Co-director, URMC Vaccine Trials and Evaluation Unit.
