METABOLISM PEARLS #19: FOLIC ACID AND VITAMIN B12 – Two vitamins that must be balanced in your Multivitamin are Folic Acid and Vitamin B12. Folic acid gets its name from the Latin root for “leaf” and is found in green leafy lettuces and other vegetables in the form of Folates which are Folic acids with multiple added glutamate, derived from the amino acid glutamine in the plant cells. In our bodies, these glutamates are removed by enzymes on the surface of the small intestine before folic acid can be absorbed. The folic acid in your Multivitamin simply gets absorbed directly into the cells. While folate absorption is less efficient from plant foods, there is a lot there so you can meet your requirements if you eat Folate-Rich foods. However, many people do not get the 400 micrograms that are needed daily especially for women of childbearing age. Folic acid deficiency during pregnancy leads to birth defects of the spinal cord and brain which is why special vitamins with more folic acid are given to pregnant women. Vitamin B12 is needed in very small amounts of 3 micrograms per day but is absorbed by binding to a protein made in the stomach lining called intrinsic factor (IF). The IF/B12 complex is absorbed in the lowest part of the small intestine called the ileum. B12 deficiency occurs in older people who don’t make enough IF in their stomach. If you take Folic acid without B12, it can lead to a form of paralysis. That is why Multivitamins balance the amount of Folic Acid and B12.
