FB Live Q&A with Dr. Tom with special guest Kiran Krishnan:
The Coronavirus, COVID-19, is on the verge of becoming a pandemic. The coronavirus is a family of viruses that actually cause a common cold as well, so we’ve all been exposed to a type of coronavirus before. This one seems to create more respiratory distress than other coronaviruses. But like any virus, the whole crux of fighting the virus is about up-regulating the immune response in the body.
Up-regulating the immune system is about providing the soldier cells, the macrophages and dendritic cells that patrol throughout your body and system, with energy.
What is their main source of energy? Butyrate, from the gut.
How do you produce Butyrate?
1.) You’re going to need short-chain fatty acids to produce them 2.) so, you’re going to need resistant starches, 3) the right prebiotics, and 4 ) the diversity of fibers within your food.
5.) Staying away from the wheat sources of fiber is because you don’t need the inflammation of leaky gut to mess up your immune system.
6.) Feeding your gut microbiome a diverse source of fermentable carbohydrates is going to be really important for up-regulating your immune response in keeping those defend cells that circulate around looking for these types of invading viruses in your mucosal system and go after them right off the bat.
7.) Your natural killer cells are really important in viral defense. Again, natural killer cells are proliferated in the Peyer’s patches. Peyer’s patches are stimulated by the microbes in the microbiome. The Megaspores do that really well. So, during cold and flu season, for example, I double my intake of the spores. It really helps up-regulate those natural killer cells and the T & B lymphocytes that help fight against the virus.
Now there are more and more cases of people being positive for the coronavirus to a point where they can transmit it, but don’t show any symptoms. It’s becoming like an influenza where the vast majority of people actually don’t show any symptoms but get exposed to it.
There was a study done and published in the British Journal of Medicine that shows when they surveyed tens of thousands of people at the end of the 2014 and 2015 flu season. They found that the vast majority of people they checked actually had antibodies to influenza present during the season and never showed symptoms.
So, the vast majority of people will likely get exposed to COVID-19. BUT, if your immune system is up and regulated it’s going to take care of the virus and hopefully not allow any symptoms to show up.
To review – you will need: 1) diversity in foods 2) don’t eat any toxigenic foods like wheat that brings down your immune system, 3). keep up with your MegaSpore probiotics 4) get some fermentable carbohydrates in there to keep the butyrate levels high to service the immune system.
These things alone can help quite a bit.
Remember your body regenerates the cells of the inside lining of your got every 3-4 days. What fuel is it those cells need to regenerate?
Butyrate.
So how do you get butyrate?
*It’s the action of the good bacteria in your gut on vegetable fiber. This is why you’re eating root vegetables.
*That’s why you print out from Google list of Prebiotic foods and have two of those every day and eat one root vegetable.
*That’s why you take the MegaPrebiotic and the Megaspores every day to help build up your butyrate levels – because it’s the fuel for your immune system, which is going through your bloodstream taking care of any of these viruses that come in.
Butyrate is the fuel to feed the immune system.
We cannot overstate the importance of it.
