CCEC hosts event on holiday wellness tips – The Ramapo News

The Civic and Community Engagement Center (CCEC) hosted Thriving During the Holidays, co-sponsored by The Office of Violence Prevention (OVP) and Health Promotion, on Monday, Nov. 24. The pre-Thanksgiving break event featured many tips and resources for students going home for the holiday season.

At the event Wellness is Now (WIN) Peers, Charbel Maroun, Julia Greco and Farrah Farahani presented a slideshow on loving yourself and having positive self-talk. The slideshow discussed what self-esteem is and the importance of healthy self-esteem, as well as self-compassion.

The slideshow also featured important campus resources for students such as counseling services and the Roadrunner Collegiate Recovery Program.

OVP Student Office Manager Lida Kelyman also presented a brochure to students on home safety tips.

The presentation and brochure included information about abusive environments and how to provide help to family and friends who may be experiencing said environments.

The rise in violence rates during the holidays was explained, providing reasons such as stress from finances and higher consumption of substances with the lack of work.

The brochure gave numerous resources that included QR codes to safe centers to stay during the holidays, as well as the National Domestic Violence Hotline and more.

CCEC Student Office Manager Sarah Glisson presented about discourse at the dinner table, giving tips to navigate through conversations that take place at dinner time during the holidays.

The tips provided centered on making sure you are staying in healthy conversation with yourself and your values as well as being able to speak your beliefs.

Some of these tips included: Choose assertiveness rather than silence or aggression, pay attention to how you say things and check in with yourself after.

The event featured a hot chocolate bar and food for students to enjoy, as well as multiple tables that they could explore. These included: vision board making, self-care kit making, coloring and affirmations, journaling and a table with general resources on campus.
