Some people complain that The IRA from the Biden administration gave unfair advantage to clean energy. The reality is that Federal financial support to clean enrgy was simply starting a process of leveling the playing field for energy costs. The fossil fuel industry has received Federal financial incentives for over 100 years amounting to way more money than the IRA, and for all of those years there has been no accouinting for the dirty byproduct of drilling, transporting, and using fossil fuel. Fossil fuel corporations knew about the climate crisis for decades and continue to mislead the public. They’re getting richer off our tax dollars. Now, oil and gas lobbyists are urging Congress to give them total legal immunity from laws or lawsuits to hold them accountable for their role in the climate crisis.
It doesn’t have to be this way. Instead of taxpayers shouldering the cost, the companies that profited from creating this mess should help fund the rebuilding of roads, homes, schools, and critical infrastructure. Encourage your Congress people to protect our right to hold powerful corporations accountable and say NO to immunity for Big Oil and Gas.
That’s why I’m calling on Congress to oppose Big Oil and Gas’s campaign for legal immunity. “Make Polluters Pay” is about shifting the cost of climate chaos off our communities and onto the polluters. “If you make a mess, you should clean it up.”
