GREENSBORO, N.C. — Black women are three times more likely to die from a pregnancy-related cause than White women. The CDC says over 80% of these deaths are deemed preventable. There is a nationwide focus on reducing black maternal mortality; in fact, this week is dedicated to helping mothers, children, fathers, and families.

Right here in Greensboro,  there is a Black Maternal Wellness and Financial Summit on Saturday. The event is free.

Event Date: Saturday, April 18th, 9 am- 11:30 am,  Presbyterian Church of the Cross, 1810 Phillips Avenue, Greensboro

“There really and truly is something for everyone on every level, even if you’re not a parent, you know parents, you have friends, you may be a
caregiver, a grandparent, an auntie, an uncle, anyone can come out and get this information, use it, and share it so that we can build a stronger community,” said Desiree Best, President, Greensboro Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority.

The event flyer describes sessions covering Black Maternal health, overall wellness, and financial empowerment with break-out events by financial experts who are part of Omega Psi Phi, Tau Omega Chapter in Greensboro.

“We have a fatherhood, real men, real talk discussion that’s being led by the group, so the fathers can have an intimate setting to ask questions on how they can support their wives, their partners,” said Kasey Hayes, Co-chair of the Economic Development Committee of the Greensboro Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority.

There will be a mental health specialist who is there to help the mothers in an intimate setting.

“In case they may not want to ask a question during the panel discussion and want to maybe meet with her one-on-one, we will have that available,” said Hayes.
