MARSHALL COUNTY, W.Va. — Marshall County Schools is expanding its free summer meal program countywide this year, offering registered families weekly boxes of food to help cover breakfast and lunch while school is out.

Starting June 8, registered families will receive seven-day boxes of food. The program will run throughout the summer until students return to school the week of Aug. 10.

Officials said the expansion is possible because of continued financial support from county residents.

“Our levy helps fund our summer feeding program, which was passed by the community here. So, that helps out tremendously with the students of Marshall County Schools,” said Rob Chavanak, the district’s director of wellness and child nutrition.

Last year, more than 400 boxes per week were distributed, but the program was limited to rural parts of the county. With the program now expanding to the entire county, officials said they are anticipating needing additional food.

“The three pickup spots will be the nutrition building, which is right beside McNinch School, Sherrard Middle School, and Cameron Elementary,” Chavanak said.

With rising costs, Chavanak said the meals are especially important during the summer months.

“I feel like it’s very important to make sure that families and students are able to get nutritious meals during the summer when school is not in session. They’re used to getting a breakfast and lunch everyday during the school year, and we want to continue that,” he said.

The last day to register is Friday, May 1.

Pickup times will be determined after registration is completed.
