Created by SpecialGuestX, Night Shift is a beauty editorial that brings generative AI directly onto the shooting set, not as a post-production tool, but as a collaborative creative instrument working alongside photographers Estevez & Belloso, models, and beauty artists in real time, allowing for true co-creation between human artistry and machine imagination.
Night Shift portrays the eerie beauty trends that will define 2026, in a story that follows nighttime through psychological states from pre-sleep to awake, through dream, nightmare, and paralysis, narrating the restlessness of the subconscious. It features a range of diverse models with prosthetic meters-long body hair, insects as face jewelry, diamond-shine full-body paint, and bloody eyeliner. Beauty choices that act as both a warning and armour.
Night Shift marks a departure in how fashion stories are made. The editorial is the result of a combination of analog and digital photography, as well as generative AI filmmaking. Generative AI worked on set as a creative collaborative tool, acting in real time alongside the creative and production crew. The result is a new kind of image-making where the boundaries between media dissolve.
Narrative emerged organically as the crew of 20 people, including photographers, creative directors, art directors, set designers, hair stylists, makeup artists, and models, co-created with AI on set. What began as a moodboard evolved into a fully realized story through the symbiotic interplay of analog photography, digital capture, and generative video and photo models.
Night Shift challenges the narrative of AI replacing traditional methods. It’s AI integrated seamlessly into the creative toolkit, enriching the narrative in ways that neither analog nor digital alone could achieve. As the SpecialGuestx team puts it: “In this editorial, analog and AI coexist as two different ways of looking at the same subject, pushing the piece toward places we would not have explored otherwise.”
Night Shift is an exploration of everything that exists in the limbo of consciousness. On one hand, a journey narrated through the human subconscious; on the other, an inquiry into the latent space where images exist before they are revealed. A space where images transform, distort, and reveal themselves as we let them evolve.
