50,000 Walmart-Sold Fitness Products Recalled After 115 Complaints, Plus Injuries

Adjustable dumbbells are a popular solution to the space-taking conundrum of a weight tree, a rack, or loose equipment on the floor. That said, some iterations of this higher-design equipment have been found to carry safety hazards—one subreddit illustrates a few consumer complaints about Bowflex, one of the most iconic brands in fitness gear. Said one Redditor, “I have both the 552 set which works great but the heavier set is hit or Miss and has dropped plates while exercising (thankfully not on my face).” [sic]

Now, another equipment manufacturer appears to be dealing with a similar issue. On April 23, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) published a recall on “about 50,000” FitRx SmartBell Quick-Select 5-52.5lbs Adjustable Dumbbells, model 8361, by Tzumi Electronics Inc. of New York. The announcement notes this affects serial numbers “KK23288361 through KK23388361 and KK207608361 through KK21347836 only.”

The notice says consumer complaints prompted the recall, adding that there have been “more than 115 reports of weight plates dislodging during use, with at least six injuries, including broken toes, bruises, contusions and lacerations.”

The CPSC says the product was sold throughout 2024 through Walmart locations and on Walmart.com. No other retailers are named.

The agency outlines the following as recourse for customers:

Consumers should immediately stop using the adjustable dumbbell and contact Tzumi Electronics for a free replacement of the dumbbell and tray. Consumers should write the word “Recalled” across the dumbbell tray using permanent spray paint or marker, register at https://myfitrx.com/recall-52-lbs/ and dispose of the product after registration is confirmed.

The recall notice also lists contact information for customers to reach the manufacturer.

A Monday search for “FitRx” on Walmart’s site turned up no results. It’s a good reminder that while strength training is valuable, it’s important to continually stay present in the workout—and keep little ones clear of exercise gear.
