Daytona Beach opens new playground, fitness area

Climb, swing, work out and play — a new playground and outdoor fitness area at Cypress Park encourages Daytona Beach residents of all ages to get moving.

The city of Daytona Beach celebrated the opening of the new playground and outdoor fitness area at Cypress Park, 981 George W. Engram Blvd., with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on April 24.

The newly installed recreational equipment is designed to provide opportunities for active play and fitness for residents of all ages. The project cost $433,745, and includes eight major pieces of equipment, combining a modern children’s playground with a dedicated outdoor fitness area. The playground features a large geometric climbing dome, a multi-activity play structure, a spinning bowl element and a three-bay swing set with six seats, including infant and traditional swings. These elements encourage climbing, swinging, balance and imaginative play. There is also a colorful cushioned fall zone under the play features.

Adjacent to the playground, the outdoor fitness area includes four exercise stations: a flex wheel and leg lift, two step platforms of varying heights and a sit-up bench. These features support strength training, cardiovascular activity and flexibility for teens and adults.

The Daytona Beach Racing and Recreational Facilities District provided a $375,028 grant to help fund the quality-of-life project.

Cypress Park is open daily from dawn to dusk. The park includes a walking trail for additional recreational use. The park is part of the Midtown Recreation Complex, which offers a range of amenities, including the Cypress Aquatic Center, the city’s premier public swimming pool, and the Julia T. and Charles W. Cherry Sr. Cultural & Educational Center. The center, which is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday, features a gymnasium, dance and music studios, computer room and kitchen, providing a hub for year-round programs and activities.
