Tamarac State of the City address by Mayor Michelle Gomez. {City of Tamarac}
Dear Neighbors,
Welcome to May, where Spring is in full bloom! (Sorry for anyone suffering from allergies.)
THANK YOU to everyone who walked, danced, jumped, laughed and had fun at our Rhythm & Wellness event on April 18th! It was wonderful spending the morning with you! So grateful to Maria (Zumba), Ron (Line Dancing), and 40+ Double Dutch Club for getting us energized and moving! And huge thanks to HCA Florida Woodmont Hospital, Affordable Medical Supply, Area Agency on Aging of Broward County, Chen Senior Medical, Absolute Best Insurance (ABI), Metropolitan Medical Center, Flavorful Nutrition, Ocean-1 Home Health Agency, Dr. Stacy Frankel, Bovell Insurance and Financial Services, Hollywood Institute (wonderful massage therapists), Mr. Greens Produce (donated delicious fresh fruits and water) and Tamarac Park & Rec Team for your participation!! (Due to the overwhelming request to continue the fun, stay tuned for more Rhythm & Wellness event dates to be announced soon!)
The Movies in the Park series returns this month on Friday, May 1st at Tamarac Sports Complex, 9901 NW 77th St. The evening begins at 6:30 p.m. with kids’ activities including face painting, inflatables, and more, and then at 8:00 p.m. everyone settles in to watch “Zootopia 2”. Bring your blanket, chairs, snacks, and more! Although the movie is about animals… please note that pets are (unfortunately) not permitted at this event.
Still Spring Cleaning? The semi-annual Community Hazardous Household Waste Recycling Event will be back on Saturday, May 2nd, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Safely recycle unneeded electronics and hazardous household waste at the Tamarac Public Services Building, 6011 Nob Hill Rd. You will need a photo ID to prove residency in Tamarac, Coconut Creek, Coral Springs, Ft. Lauderdale, Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, Lauderdale Lakes, or Pompano Beach.
Also Saturday, May 2nd, starting at 9:30 a.m., the Florida Panthers (back-to-back Stanley Cup champions, might I add) will be hosting free ball hockey clinic sessions at the Tamarac Multipurpose Center, 7531 N. University Drive for children ages 5 to 14. No previous organized ball hockey experience – perfect! This is a great opportunity to introduce your kids to hockey (without the need for an ice rink!)!, so please make sure to register your child at floridapanthers.com/THFF. Space is limited.
Scrolling on social media has become the norm, so why not learn to use it to your advantage? This month, the City kicks off TikTok Content Skills Training every Tuesday for beginners and every Wednesday for intermediate-level users throughout May from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Tamarac Community Center, 8601 W Commercial Blvd. Parks and Recreation staff will be teaching residents how to create and share TikTok videos with confidence and build editing, creativity, and engagement skills. It’s $30/resident and $40/non-resident, and you can sign up online at https://fltamaracweb.myvscloud.com/webtrac/web/iteminfo.html?Module=AR&FMID=102855645

Starting this month, on May 20th, and then the 3rd Wednesday of each month thereafter at 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., the HEAL Program will be presented by the YMCA of South Florida at the Tamarac Recreation Center, 7501 N. University Drive. This free program offers individual and group counseling for families with minor children. Please join us on Monday, May 25th, as we pay tribute to the countless individuals who sacrificed their lives to protect our freedom at the City’s Memorial Day Ceremony, starting at 10:30 a.m. at Tamarac Veterans’ Park, 7825 Southgate Blvd. The program will include a Special guest speaker, light refreshments, and more.
