I sure hope everyone is enjoying this weather. This is what Spring is supposed to be like. In years past, it seems that we went from cold to hot, with no sping temperatures.
We had a good week at this Nutrition Center. The rain did not stop folks from coming in. We had new patrons, which was very nice. I always ask how they knew about us, and the answer the most common answer is that a friend told them about the Center. I will say again that word of mouth is the very best advertisement.
Speaking of advertisement, our Table Ad this week, and next, is for the huge Missionary Acres Yard Sale! This is a semi-annual event, and the items are donated to the Acres from all across the country. On May 7, 8, 9, everything is half price! Missionasry Acres is about 5 miles off of Hwy 67, at Silva, on Hwy 34 East. Go check out this huge sale. We are only mentioning this in our colomn becasse they bought two weeks of Table Ads! If you would like to advertise your busiess with us, it is just $25 for one full week of ad display on each dining table, and a mention of your business in our colum, as a donor to the Center. Give us a call at 573-998-2544 to schedule your week!
We had an absolute full house on Friday. Patrons started arrivig by 10:20 to choose their table, and soon make a salad, while waitig for the serving time to begin at 11:00. The kitchen is busy prior to 11:00, once the first food is prepared for the town meal delivery. We saw new people, and ones who had not been in several months. We served 113 meals, and that was with many of our regulars not coming in. It never ceases to amaze me that we can serve so many patrons in such a short time. We appreciate each of you, seniors and non-seniors.
While the Friday crowd was max for dining, the Bingo players were also very much in abundance. I do not even know how many stayed to play, byt the room seemed full. Crown Hospice hosted the games. The volunteers and a few friends help the Center with prizes when it is our day to host the Free Bingo. We appreciate these folks so much. Two Fridays of each month are sponsored by Crown Hospice and Southern Care and Comfort. The remaining Fridays (two, and sometimes three) are ours to cover. If you would like to help with prizes, we would appreciaate it. The number one thing that players want is a box of snack cakes or ags of the little donuts, etc. We buy from The Bread Store in Poplar Bluff, where it is a discoutned price. Once volunteer also has another avenue to get some. If you would not want to purchaes items, but want to help, you may donate for the prizes and we will make the purchases. We have two ladies who do this. The Bingo game time is a great fellowship tool for the seniors. Interaction with others is vital for seniors.
Just a reminder that the Senior Commodity Boxes are in, if you have not picked yours up yet. Thank you to those who collected yours in a timely manner. They take up a lot of room in our dining room, and that is the only place we have to put them, as our space is limited. I appreciate your attention to this matter.
This Friday, May 8, Karen with Legacy Hospice will be with us for the monthly Vet-to-Vet Cafe. Karen arrives by 10:30 a.m. to viist with veterans and patrons. She also always brings a door prize for a drawing. Be sure to meet with Karen and thank her for her faithfulness, and caring for our veterans.
I picked up two frames of veterans to be honored at the Nutrition Center soon. They are Lloyd Daves, Lavern Daves’ brother, and Troy Hale, the oldest known living WWII veteran in Wayne County. We will be scheduling the unveiling with family members. I will submit the date to the column when it is confirmed with families. It is a joy and an honor to display our veteran heros on the walls of the Nutrition Center. These are all done by donation. The Center does not pay for them out of our budget. If you have not seen our Honor Wall, you must!
Our monthly Board Meeting will be on Tuesday, May 19, ast 1:00 p.m. We invite you to attend to learn more about the Nutrition Center. You would be surprised, and hopefully impressed with how hard we work to make the Center be successful, for the seniors of our county, and beyond. We are also open to new ideas to consider. Mark your calendar for May 19!
Our next Birthday Celebration will be on May 22. We will have a special dessert and ice cream to celebrate the May birthdays!

Friday evening, July 17, will be our very first JULY JAM!! This event will be scheduted for outside. There will be live music provided by The Cade White Band (I need to clarify if he has an office band name). We will have food for purchae during the event. Vendors are welcome to set up for crafts, baked goods, etc. There will not be dining food allowed at the booths, that would interfere with the Center’s fundraiser efforts. There will more details to come, but mark that calendar NOW, so you don’t miss it! Also, you will need to bring a lawn chair.
It is my understanding that the Labor Day Picnic will occur under the direction of the Black River Volunteer Fire Department. If this is true, we will set up to sell our funnel cakes. This will be in September, Labor Day weekend.
