Trump signing proclamation to restore Presidential Fitness Test for kids

(NewsNation) — President Donald Trump will sign a proclamation restoring the Presidential Fitness Test Award on Tuesday morning, a White House official confirmed to NewsNation.

You can watch the event on this page at 10:30a/9:30C.

The award was given to schoolchildren who passed certain athletic requirements, including sit-ups, pull-ups, push-ups, running, and reaching. The test began in 1966 but was changed in 2012 to focus more on individual health than athletics.

Trump first signaled his intent to resurrect the test last summer when he signed an executive order creating a sports council with the goal of reintroducing the assessment.

The order directs the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness and Nutrition to create school-based programs that reward excellence in physical education and develop criteria for a Presidential Fitness Award.

The council includes golfer Bryson DeChambeau, NFL kicker Harrison Butker, Dr. Stephen Soloway, former NFL player Cody Campbell, golfer Annika Sörenstam, retired wrestler Paul “Triple H” Levesque and NFL Hall of Famer Lawrence Taylor.
