In an industry with a pattern of suppression and appropriation, two creatives are ensuring Black voices in beauty are being not only heard but celebrated. Last Friday, stylist Jrod Lacks and hair architect extraordinaire Jawara Wauchope hosted the second edition of Black Hair Reimagined: The New Era of Beauty. The event, which seeks to highlight the adaptation, transformation, and individual expression of Black hair, showcased the hairstyling talents of six innovators in beauty: Malcolm Marquez, Fesa Nu, Vernon François, Issac Poleon, Joshua Meekins, and Jawara Wauchope himself. For the duration of the show, models pumped down the runway in intricate styles that can only be likened to works of high art, with displays of dimensional height, lush cuts and rich colors. In attendance at the event were some of the most influential Black voices in beauty and fashion like Carlos Nazario, Danessa Myricks, Paloma Elsesser, and Tyrell Hampton. While guests settled in to their seats in the front row, we got the VIP treatment with backstage access to admire how these luxurious locks came to grace the runway.
