Barriere, a wearable health patch company, is looking to disrupt the dietary supplement category.

Nearly every supplement on the market today is available only as a pill or powder. Barriere offers an alternative for people who may not like to swallow pills or just feel like they’re not getting the full benefit of a pill-form supplement.

In theory it makes sense; since you are bypassing the stomach, the patch would deliver nutrients directly into the bloodstream. Since the effectiveness of oral supplements can be limited by one’s digestive health, this seems like a good workaround.

The studies on the efficacy of wearable patches seem promising. This study on vitamin D patches showed an increase in vitamin D levels after 8 weeks. The most noticeable rise came around the 4-6 week mark, so it took a bit of time. Aside from some skin irritation issues reported by a few participants, the patches were reported to be safe as well.

One limitation of the study, however, was that there was no control group. To properly measure the efficacy of wearable patches, it should be compared to the same supplement in pill form. For vitamin D in particular, you could even compare the patch to people who get regular sun exposure.

In addition, the studies cited on the Barriere website are on transdermal patches in general, not necessarily their patches. Patches can differ in size, type, and potency. Part of the appeal of Barriere’s products is that they are quite small. By no means does it automatically make them less effective, it’s just worth noting.

Barriere is planning to roll out their products in 1,700 Walmart stores after a successful test run last year. Whether or not the science fully catches up to the hype, Barriere seems to be hitting at the right time. Consumers are increasingly skeptical of traditional supplements and hungry for more convenient, lifestyle-friendly alternatives. A small, stylish patch you can slap on like a sticker and forget about has obvious appeal over a handful of pills.

If more research comes out showing it’s more effective than traditional supplements, then that’s an even bigger win. The real test will come as the brand scales. Larger distribution means more scrutiny, and more scrutiny means the science will need to hold up. For now, Barriere is an interesting bet on where wellness is heading; wearable, personalized, and convenient.
