MasterChef's Jackie reveals hidden secret behind immunity win

During Wednesday night’s episode, MasterChef Australia contestants battled it out for an immunity pin. While every home cook showcased talent and flavours that made Jean-Christophe dance (literally), one hopeful in particular impressed the judges by a mile.

With MasterChef alumni and media personality Khanh Ong as the celebrity judge, contestants were definitely stressed, but excited by the challenge to make the most flavourful sandwich imaginable in 60 minutes.

The one requirement from Jean-Christophe? That the sandwich creates a “discoteque” in his “bouche”.

The translation?

He wants a whole lot of flavour in his mouth.

In the end, the decision was tough for the judges, however, one hopeful came out on top, earning the immunity pin.

Speaking to WHO, Jackie Yu discussed her secret (non-cooking-related) weapon that just may have helped her secure her place in the competition.

While a few of the contestants opened up about their superstitions that got them through the competition, this one certainly came to life tonight!

Big change to immunity pin rule in 2026

Fans had been hoping for the immunity pin’s return to the competition and luckily, it did! However, this year, whoever wins the immunity pin can only choose to use it during an elimination round after they hear what the challenge is and before the cooking starts.

After a fierce competition and mouth-watering display of sandwiches ranging from a ‘Nduja Chicken Sandwich’ to a ‘Roti John’, in the end it was Jackie’s ‘Bulgogi Philly Cheesesteak’ that secured her the immunity pin.

It gave Jean-Christophe the party of flavours he was after and left us salivating (and frankly, jealous) at home.

Speaking to WHO, Jackie revealed one superstition she had throughout the show that she believed played in her favour at least once.

Jackie’s secret superstition that secured her MasterChef win

Jackie laughed about being “really superstitious” when it came to the show, however, during Wednesday’s episode, the superstition clearly paid off!

“I will always try and do things that will at least, I know, give me some kind of mental confidence to be my best on that day,” she told WHO. “So I would do this funny thing where I would check my astrology reading for that day and it would say what my lucky colour was.”

“And so on that day, if it was a cooking day or an elimination day, I’d wear that colour and then I’d be like, ‘OK, I’m going to be safe today.’ And I didn’t think it would work, but once it really did work. And I was like, OK, I’m going to keep doing this every time now. That’s why I’m just wearing these basic colours every day. There’s truth to that.”

Wearing navy blue really paid off for the star, and we can’t wait to keep an eye out for some more exciting colours (and cooks) to come!
