Rochester school nutrition worker wins state Hero Award

ROCHESTER, Minn. — A Rochester elementary school cafeteria worker has been recognized for creating a welcoming space where students feel safe and cared for during lunch.

Luke Fenton, a student nutrition services associate at Lincoln K-8 Elementary School, received the 2026 Hero Award from the Minnesota School Nutrition Association (MSNA) The award honors someone who consistently goes above and beyond in their role.

MSNA says Fenton greets students by name, encourages them to try new foods and offers a friendly face during tough moments. He even keeps stuffed animals on hand to help calm students who are struggling.

“His kindness is evident,” according to the association. Fenton provides a steady and caring presence that helps students feel respected and important.

Fenton is credited with making sure meals are hot and ready on time for lunch service. He adjusts meal counts to use resources wisely and reduce waste while maintaining high standards for food quality, cleanliness and organization.

He sanitizes serving lines, keeps temperature logs and ensures the cafeteria runs smoothly even during the busiest times. MSNA says Fenton arrives with a positive attitude and regularly stays late to make sure the kitchen is clean and ready for the next morning.

“There are so many unsung heroes in school nutrition and it’s an honor for us to recognize Luke for the incredible contributions he makes to ensure a positive cafeteria experience for students,” said Glen Ritter, president of the Minnesota School Nutrition Association. “His care and commitment to support students’ nutritional needs and their emotional wellbeing are inspiring.”

Fenton was presented the award on May 1 as part of the national School Lunch Hero Day. He will also be honored when association members meet for their annual conference in St. Cloud in August.
