Beaumont ISD cuts Wellness Coordinators, Behavior Interventionists as district overhauls staffing model

Beaumont ISD is eliminating Wellness Coordinator and Behavior Interventionist positions at the end of the 2025-2026 school year amid a district-wide restructuring.

BEAUMONT, Texas — Beaumont ISD is eliminating the positions of Behavior Interventionist and Wellness Coordinator at the end of the 2025-2026 school year, according to internal memos obtained by 12News. Employees in both roles received letters from the district’s Human Resources office informing them their positions will no longer exist beginning with the 2026-2027 school year.

The district’s website indicates there are at least 14 Wellness Coordinators alone, suggesting the cuts will affect a significant number of employees across both positions.

The cuts are tied to a restructuring underway since the Texas Education Agency appointed a new Board of Managers and superintendent on April 29, 2026. “Superintendent Sandi Massey has established a new vision for the District and is implementing a new, instructionally focused model across all campuses,” the letter to Wellness Coordinators states.

12News has reached out to the district for comment and is awaiting their response.

Beaumont ISD currently employs 13 Student Wellness Coordinators assigned across high school, middle school, and elementary campuses, along with a District Lead Wellness Coordinator, according to the district’s website. The coordinators, who work within the counseling department, have backgrounds in case management, counseling, and social work, according to the website. Their duties include crisis intervention, individual counseling, behavior support, and connecting students and families with community resources. They also serve on the district’s Crisis Response Team.

Behavior Interventionists are part of the district’s Special Programs Department, which also includes counselors, academic interventionists, dyslexia interventionists, campus behavior coordinators, and Section 504 coordinators, according to the Beaumont ISD website.

The district said the reorganization is driving the staffing changes. “The District is realigning positions to better support the accelerated instructional needs of students,” according to the memo sent to Wellness Coordinators.

Behavior Interventionists are being offered the option to transition into classroom teaching roles for the 2026-2027 school year under a new Chapter 21 contract, but the district warned the move would come with a financial cost. “Due to the change in position and return to a teaching role, your compensation for the 2026-2027 school year will likely be reduced from your current compensation,” the memo states. Those employees were given until Monday, May 11, 2026, to sign and return the letter if they chose to accept. The district emphasized the decision is voluntary, noting employees “may consult with an attorney prior to accepting this offer.”

Wellness Coordinators were not offered a direct reassignment. Instead, the district said they will be invited to a private internal job fair at a later date where they can learn about and apply for new positions within the restructured model. However, placement is not certain, with the district stating “selection for any position is not guaranteed and will be based on District needs, position requirements, and the qualifications of applicants.”

The district acknowledged the impact of the news on Wellness Coordinators. “This decision is not a reflection of your service, commitment, or the value you have brought to our students, staff, and school community,” the memo reads.

Both letters were signed by Derwin Samuels, Jr., Executive Director of Human Resources. Employees with questions were directed to contact the Office of Human Resources at 409-617-5094.
