Private legal practitioner, Amanda Clinton has weighed in on the arrest of independent Asante Akyem North MP, Kwame Ohene Frimpong, stating that diplomatic passports do not automatically grant full immunity from international law enforcement actions.

Speaking on the matter during a media discussion on Joy News on May 13, 2026, Amanda Clinton explained that under the Vienna Convention, full diplomatic immunity largely applies to accredited diplomats attached to embassies or consulates with specific diplomatic status.

According to her, possessing a diplomatic passport alone does not necessarily shield an individual from arrest or investigations abroad.

Her comments follow reports that the MP, popularly known as OK Frimpong, was detained at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam over alleged financial crimes including suspected money laundering and romance scams involving about $32 million. Parliament has since confirmed the detention while investigations continue.

Amanda Clinton suggested that the reported international operation may indicate that foreign law enforcement agencies did not fully trust Ghanaian institutions with sensitive investigative information for fear the probe could be compromised.

She further claimed that some individuals in Ghana enjoy a level of protection that makes them “untouchable,” despite security agencies allegedly compiling dossiers on them.

“I am privy to certain conversations with certain security agencies who have built serious dossiers about people… but nothing can be done about them because they enjoy full immunity,” she stated.

The lawyer, however, stressed that the allegations against the MP remain unproven and cautioned the public against drawing conclusions prematurely.

She noted that money laundering investigations are often highly sophisticated, making it possible for individuals to unknowingly become linked to suspicious financial transactions.

“It’s alleged, and money laundering is incredibly sophisticated,” she said, adding that the MP could still mount a defence distancing himself from certain transactions.

Amanda Clinton also argued that Ghana’s failure to act decisively on issues flagged by local security agencies could force international bodies to step in, ultimately leading to embarrassment for the country on the global stage.

She maintained that Parliament would likely reflect deeply on the implications of the arrest, considering the stature and responsibilities attached to the office of an MP.
