After the adrenaline of wedding planning, months of logistics, and the emotional high of saying I do, what you crave on a honeymoon is not always more adventure.
Sometimes, what you need is stillness, a place where the schedule softens, the phone stays on ‘Do Not Disturb,’ and the only real plan is to rest.
And that is precisely what Grand Resort Bad Ragaz gave us. Known as Europe’s #1 wellness hotel, a proud member of Leading Hotels of the World, and one of the continent’s most iconic thermal spa destinations, this hotel property is the kind of place that quietly whispers luxury instead of announcing it. If you know, you know.
Bad Ragaz itself is not the Swiss destination most travelers rush to first. It is quieter than the Swiss Alps, more understated, more intimate. The kind of place honeymooners come not to do more, but to finally do less.
A Room Designed to Linger
Our room was elegant, it featured a spacious living room, a proper vanity for makeup, and a balcony overlooking the Swiss mountain range. The kind of room you actually want to spend time in. Fresh fruit waited on arrival, along with a complimentary soft drink minibar, another reminder that the hotel understands the details that make a stay feel generous.
There was an amazing pillow menu, great turndown service each evening complete with miniature Swiss chocolates. A his-and-her bathroom anchored by a soaking bathtub, thermal-water-infused toiletries that subtly reminded you where you were.
And waiting for me in the room was an itinerary outlining my treatments for our three-night stay, a sign that this was not simply a luxury hotel. It was a place designed to restore you.
Grand Resort Bad Ragaz is not flashy. It doesn’t need to be. It is the kind of luxury that feels rooted in confidence, the kind of place where everyone anticipates your needs and wellness is treated not as an amenity, but as a philosophy.
The resort’s Tamina Health Centre, staffed by more than 100 healthcare professionals, offers highly personalized programs focused on detox, weight loss, longevity, recharge, or wellness checkups. Well being does not stop at the spa, the health center also works with the resort’s Michelin-starred restaurants to create personalized menus tailored to guests participating in health programs. This is wellness taken seriously and yet, nothing about it feels clinical, only deeply luxurious and restorative from within.
The Gift of Thermal Water
At the center of Grand Resort Bad Ragaz is what has drawn people here for centuries: water. The famed thermal spring in the Tamina Gorge is celebrated for its unique mineral composition and healing properties. Emerging at a temperature of 36°C, the thermal water is said to stimulate circulation, soothe muscles and joints, support metabolism, and create a profound sense of wellbeing. But beyond the science, there is something emotional about floating in warm mineral water after months of wedding planning.
Every day, I returned to the historic Helenabad, the resort’s exclusive thermal bath reserved for hotel guests and dating back to the 19th century and every day, it became my favorite ritual. This is only one part of the experience. Grand Resort Bad Ragaz also offers access to the architectural masterpiece that is Tamina Therme, the public thermal spa spanning more than 8,600 square metres, as well as the resort’s own Thermal Spa, a sanctuary of peace with multiple saunas and saunas and steam baths.
If you are the type who likes to move, the hotel offers daily wellness and relaxation classes including Yoga, Aqua Fit, and Core Power, all complimentary as part of the stay. For my stay, I chose the Recharge Programme, designed to restore body and mind with a mindfulness massage, an aromatherapy full-body massage session and a Cellcosmet Swiss Radiance facial. This was not wellness for the sake of checking a box, this was self-care.
A Michelin Playground for Food Lovers
Grand Resort Bad Ragaz is, quite frankly, a paradise for gourmets. The resort’s culinary program is not merely sophisticated, it is one of the most impressive hotel dining lineups in Europe, boasting 6 Michelin stars, 1 Green Michelin Star, and more than 60 GaultMillau points, spread across seven restaurants, three bars, a bistro, a café, and even sushi takeaway. Few hotels in Europe can say that.
Three Michelin-starred restaurants anchor the experience: Memories by Sven Wassmer (3 Michelin stars) IGNIV by Andreas Caminada (2 Michelin stars) verve by sven (1 Michelin star) And because this is Grand Resort Bad Ragaz, where wellness and water are central to everything, there is even a water sommelier, a detail that somehow feels completely on brand in a place so deeply rooted in thermal water and spa culture.
Our first dinner was at Zollstube, the resort’s rustic Swiss restaurant where hospitality feels as warm and comforting as the food itself. It feels less like dining in a hotel and more like being welcomed into someone’s Alpine home.
The evening began with a glass of Wegelin Malanser Sauvignon Blanc, a crisp local start to dinner. Then came an asparagus cream soup, topped with whipped cream and croutons. Fish fritters in beer batter, served with saffron mayonnaise. One detail that impressed me immediately and consistently across the entire property was how menus carefully listed the provenance of ingredients, and if an ingredient’s source was not specified, the assumption was simple: Swiss.
Every morning began at verve by sven, the resort’s Michelin-starred restaurant where breakfast alone felt like an event featuring an extraordinary spread of local cheeses, yogurts, fresh fruit, coffee made exactly to your preference, fresh waffles and eggs cooked to order. It was the kind of breakfast that made us linger longer than planned and on a honeymoon, that is exactly what you want.
Dinner at verve by sven delivered some of the most memorable bites of our entire trip, the kind of bites that remind you why Michelin restaurants set themselves apart.
We began with Sbrinz cheese potato fritters and “Ribel” corn chicken nuggets with fir mayonnaise, playful yet deeply rooted in regional flavor.
Then came Lake Constance catfish and beautifully delicate goat’s cheese dumplings from Toni Odermatt. For mains, a spectacular pike perch from Lago Maggiore topped with oona caviar, followed by Swiss Black Angus served with braised ox tail. Each dish was precise, thoughtful, and technically excellent without ever feeling cold.
The single most memorable bite of our entire trip to Switzerland came at the very end: hay ice cream with young carrots, sea buckthorn, and caramelized chocolate. One of those desserts that makes you pause after the first bite.
A Hotel That Makes It Hard to Leave
Grand Resort Bad Ragaz is one of those rare hotels where leaving the property begins to feel like effort. We had every intention of exploring more but each morning, the thermal baths and spa pulled us back. Still, we did manage to leave briefly for an afternoon ride around the lovely town of Bad Ragaz.
Just beyond the resort lies the Bündner Herrschaft, one of Switzerland’s most celebrated wine regions, while art lovers will find sculptures woven throughout town, a reflection of Bad Ragaz’s connection to Bad RagARTz, the internationally renowned open-air exhibition that transforms the destination every few years.
There is plenty here to explore. And yet, what makes Grand Resort Bad Ragaz so special is not just what surrounds it, but what happens when you allow yourself to slow down inside it.
At Grand Resort Bad Ragaz, wellness is not simply about thermal baths, treatments, or Michelin-starred meals: it is about giving yourself permission to pause, unplug, reconnect and to begin married life not in motion, but in stillness.
