Cat Deeley is secretly covering her grey hair in a very unexpected way

Covering grey hair can be a time-consuming business. Roots wait for no woman, and keeping on top of them can be especially challenging when you’re juggling motherhood with a busy career. It’s a situation Cat Deeley has become recently acquainted with – and she’s come up with a surprising (and genius) way to banish the regrowth.

‘I”ve started to get a few greys,’ the This Morning presenter tells GH. ‘And I don’t have time to go to the salon every few weeks, because it takes ages for me to sit in a salon.’

‘What I’ve started doing is colouring the greys myself, first thing in the morning which usually is the only time I’ve got,’ says Cat, 49, who’s a mum to two boys. ‘I’ll go to the studio 40 minutes early, dye it myself, wash my hair there, and then my makeup artist will give me a blow-dry. And then I’ll be on the telly.’

So next time you see Cat looking freshly blow-dried on This Morning, there’s a strong chance she’s been busy with the box dye behind the scenes!

But don’t worry, she’s not causing carnage at the studio with her DIY dye sessions. ‘There are no stains,’ she assures us. ‘I’m a complete amateur, so if I can do it, anyone can do it.’

Cat has recently been unveiled as the latest L’Oreal Paris ambassador, so it’s fitting that the product she’s using is their Preference box dye in Golden Blonde – a steal at £12

‘I literally just do the roots, take it through a little bit through the lengths, and I’m done. It’s brilliant.’

She says she’ll still leave complicated creative colouring to the hair professionals, however. ‘I wouldn’t trust myself, because I’ve had so many bad hair days where I’ve done stuff myself,’ she confesses. ‘I once dyed my hair with red shampoo, thinking, “Oh, it’ll just bring out a coppery tone. Strawberry blonde, that would be nice.” No. It went like orange. It was just awful.’

At almost 50, Cat says she’s done with beauty experiments and is simply happy to stick with what works. ‘I found a hair colour and style that suits me,’ she says. ‘I think that’s the thing that comes with age, which is confidence. I think I follow fashion a bit less, and I pay attention to what works for me.’

And if that includes craftily dyeing her hair at work? Well, why not!
