Popular supplements recalled as FDA reopens investigation into salmonella outbreak

Federal health officials have reopened a multistate salmonella investigation after 22 new cases emerged.

WASHINGTON — Federal health authorities have reopened a multistate outbreak investigation tied to salmonella contamination in dietary supplements containing moringa, with the case count rising to 119 infections across 36 states since the probe began last year.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced the reopened investigation May 27 after 22 new illnesses surfaced in four states following the initial closure of the probe on March 17.

Of the 119 confirmed cases, 32 people have been hospitalized. No deaths have been reported. Illnesses began as early as Aug. 22, 2025, with the most recent onset recorded April 26.

The renewed investigation prompted Total Nutrition Inc. of Deer Park, N.Y., to voluntarily recall two products: TNVitamins Ultra Potent Complete Green Superfood Moringa capsules and Doctor’s Pride Complete Green Superfood Ultra Potent Moringa capsules, both sold in 120-count bottles. The company announced the recall May 26. The affected lots were distributed nationally through Amazon, Walmart, TikTok Shop, Target and the company’s own websites.

Officials suspect a common source of contamination, and of 79 people interviewed, 89% reported consuming a product containing moringa leaf powder.

Salmonella infection can cause fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare cases, the bacteria can enter the bloodstream and trigger severe complications including arterial infections, endocarditis and arthritis. Young children, elderly people and those with weakened immune systems face the greatest risk of serious illness.

The FDA said it is conducting additional traceback of the supply chain to identify the contamination source and is working with partners to sample products and determine whether additional items may be affected.
