Be honest, parents, now that summer vacation has officially arrived, are you just a little worried that your teenager’s summer job will be sitting on the couch?
You can see the routine already. Up until 3 AM battling online opponents or scrolling TikTok, sleeping until mid-afternoon, and somehow still “thinking about” that summer job they promised they’d totally have locked down by mid-June. At this rate, their biggest workout this summer might be opening the refrigerator door.
Here’s some good news: There’s a way for you to help them hit pause on the couch potato lifestyle, and it won’t cost you a dime.

According to Dakota News Now, Planet Fitness is once again rolling out its popular “High School Summer Pass”, giving teens ages 14 to 19 free access to their gyms all summer long. That includes both Sioux Falls locations, on West 41st Street and East 10th Street, so no matter which side of town you’re on, there’s a treadmill with your teen’s name on it.
It works like this: teens register for the program, and from June 1 through August 31, they can work out completely free. No gimmicks, no hidden fees, just a solid way to stay active during those long South Dakota summer days, when it’s too hot to do anything besides complain about the humidity.
Planet Fitness CEO Colleen Keating says the goal is to “break down the barriers to fitness,” which is a nice way of saying, let’s get kids moving before they become a barcalounger themselves.
It’s a win-win for both of you. Teens get a chance to build healthy habits, burn off some energy, and maybe even meet friends outside of a group chat. And parents, you get the peace of mind that comes with knowing your kids are staying active, while getting the gift of a little quieter house for an hour or two each day.
Here’s another bonus: parents can snag a free one-day pass to check out the gym, and help get their kids acclimated to the Summer Pass program.
