Iron is a mineral that the body needs for growth and development. Your body uses iron to make haemoglobin and myoglobin and to make hormones. In India, according to a 2024 study conducted by the Nutrients Journal, the prevalence of anaemia remains high in children, especially those in rural areas, and in women of childbearing age.

So, if you are iron-deficient, you should be eating iron-rich foods and taking some supplements prescribed by a healthcare professional. However, eating supplements comes with its own disadvantages and risks.

What is the best way to take an iron supplement?

In an Instagram video shared on May 28, Dr Vipul, a diabetologist, stressed that most people take iron tablets incorrectly. Sharing the video, he wrote, “Most people take iron tablets the wrong way… and then wonder why their haemoglobin is not improving.” Iron works best when taken correctly, he stressed. Here’s when you should be taking them:

1. Empty stomach

According to Dr Vipul, small changes in how you take your supplements can make a huge difference. Firstly, he advised that iron tablets should always be taken first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. “It is a misconception that taking the supplement daily will lead to a faster increase in blood levels; absolutely not. You must take it on alternate days; this method actually promotes a quicker rise in iron levels,” he explained.

2. With vitamin C

Next, he suggested taking iron supplements on alternate days, with orange juice or lemon water. This is because both of these beverages contain vitamin C, and iron is absorbed much more effectively when taken alongside them.

3. Avoid taking with caffiene

Dr Vipul also advised against taking iron supplements with tea, coffee, and calcium. According to the Health Science Authority, tannins in tea, caffeine in coffee and calcium reduce iron absorption.

4. Take iron supplements for at least 3 to 6 months

Lastly, Dr Vipul recommended continuing iron supplementation for at least three to six months. He explained that this is because once the body receives an adequate supply of iron, it begins to synthesise haemoglobin. While haemoglobin levels typically return to normal within just one month, the body’s internal iron stores often remain depleted. Therefore, to fully replenish these iron reserves, it is essential to continue taking the iron supplement for at least this period.
