BROOKINGS, S.D. – South Dakota State University Extension is pleased to welcome Megan Block as a new nutrition field specialist.
In her role, Block will work with families across the state on food preservation best practices and the Farm to School program that connects South Dakota children with local produce and livestock producers. She is based in Watertown.
A native of Florence, South Dakota, Block grew up on a multi-generational beef farm, and said her background drew her to being a dietitian so she could help others, especially children, understand where food comes from.
“I noticed many children believe food comes from a store and don’t know or understand all the work it takes to grow what we consume,” Block said. “I am excited to bring my background in the agricultural field and as a mother to my professional life as a dietitian.”
Block graduated from SDSU with a bachelor’s degree in education and human sciences, and a master’s in nutrition and exercise science with a specialization in nutritional sciences. Her previous experience includes working as a clinical dietitian for Prairie Lakes Healthcare/Sodexo.
“We are excited to have Megan join due to her passion for nutrition education and experience in community outreach and programming,” said Michelle Tjeerdsma, SDSU Extension Family, Food and Wellness Program Director.
