Since greens powders are supplements, LaValle urges looking for powders that have legitimate third-party testing or certification, such as from the BSCG, NSF Contents Certified, NSF Certified for Sport, or Informed Sport. “These programs differ in their exact testing criteria, but they can help verify product identity, label claims, contaminants, and, in sport-focused programs, the absence of prohibited substances,” he adds.
Just like the food you buy from the grocery store, the quality of the greens matters. Organic ingredients are always ideal, LaValle says, adding that you should “avoid unnecessary stimulants and excessive proprietary blends, and provide realistic serving sizes.”
