COVID has largely faded from everyday conversation, but it hasn’t gone away. Wastewater levels are now rising across much of the United States.
WastewaterSCAN reports that SARS-CoV-2 concentrations in August are up 106% compared with July 2026. With conventional COVID testing now much less common, wastewater monitoring can provide an early look at how widely the virus is circulating. National wastewater levels are currently rated high and trending upward, although COVID-related emergency room visits remain relatively low overall.
Public health experts recommend taking extra care to protect people at greater risk from infection, including older adults, infants and people with weakened immune systems.
