Crafted at Powdermills Hotel in Battle, East Sussex earned a spot on The Independent’s list of top wellness retreats for a “seriously relaxing reset.”
Introducing the list, it said: “Summer may be over, but many of us are thinking about how to optimise our health for the next chapter.

Crafted at Powdermills describes itself as a “life-friendly” hotel and members’ club set around a seven-acre lake within 78 acres of ancient woodlands, streams and old pastures.
The Independent said Powdermills’ “biggest draw” is the lake for paddle boarding, kayaking and wild swims.
It adds: “A wood-fired hot tub, cold plunge pools and a sauna have been positioned along its banks to make the most of the bucolic views.
“Then there are the less lo-fi fitness facilities: padel courts, a state-of-the-art gym offering drop-in PT sessions as well as Pilates and barre, as well as boxing and HIIT for those who prefer to get their pulses racing.”
The hotel offers a range of rooms, from cosy rooms to larger suites and three private cottages, featuring a mix of vintage finds and modern crafts.
Members enjoy access to a gym, padel, creative workshops, and lakeside experiences, with a top restaurant also on offer to guests.
The Independent added: “Guests can mingle with members in the orangerie-style restaurant with a seasonal menu, and finish up the night in the colourful speakeasy-style cocktail bar or on-site pub.”

A review summary notes how many travellers find it “tranquil and conveniently located near local attractions”, offering “stylish interiors and thoughtfully designed rooms” also earning praise.
It adds that service is friendly, and that cleanliness is often highlighted.
One visitor said in their review: “I am not going to beat around the bush: this extraordinary place is worth every penny and splendid in every area of interest.
“Also, the chocolate mousse is to die for.”

Another wrote: “The setting is stunning, with the hotel surrounded by lakes and countryside, and it felt peaceful from the moment we arrived.
“The room was comfortable, clean and well looked after, with thoughtful touches that made it feel a bit more special than your average hotel.
“We slept really well and enjoyed being able to properly switch off for a couple of days.
“The standout for us was the staff.
“Everyone was friendly and helpful without being overbearing, and there was a relaxed atmosphere throughout the hotel.
“Food and drinks were also very good, particularly breakfast.”
