Why Do Vaccine Shots Ache? #chemistry #science #facts #vaccine #covid19 #biology

  • October 20, 2026

Why do vaccine shots ache for days? It’s not the needle. In the Pfizer trial about 8 in 10 people had a sore arm after the vaccine, and about 1 in 10 after the same needle with salt water (Polack et al., 2020). The ache is inflammation: the shot sets off an alarm and immune cells rush to the spot (HervĂ© et al., 2019).

There’s no virus in an mRNA COVID shot. It’s instructions in tiny fat bubbles: cells near the shot read them in the cytoplasm (they never enter the nucleus), build one harmless piece of the virus, its spike, and break the instructions down (CDC). Your immune system learns the spike, so it knows the real virus if it ever comes. No sore arm doesn’t mean it failed: soreness doesn’t track protection (Hermann et al., 2022). About the mRNA COVID vaccines (Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna). Not medical advice.
