Does vitamin A protect against measles?

  • November 3, 2026

Vitamin A can help treat children sick with measles, particularly in places where vitamin A deficiency is common. But here in the United States, vitamin A deficiency is not common. And, if vitamin A is not taken under medical supervision, too much of it can be toxic.

What’s the best way to protect against measles?

The MMR vaccine is unquestionably the best way to protect against measles. It trains the immune system to recognize the measles virus and fight it.

For children too young for the vaccine, or for children with weakened immune systems, surround them with healthy, vaccinated people.

A healthcare provider may use Vitamin A to help treat some children with measles, but it is not an alternative to vaccination.
