In this video I demonstrated a breathing technique to improve our immunity. In this time of pandemic, it’s essential we practice it to boost our immunity and health. I have broken down this breathing technique in 3 different parts :
1. Inhale through your nose.
As inhaling through the nose allows the sinuses produce Nitric Oxide, which increase our lungs’ capacity to absorb oxygen and oxygenate our blood cells 10%-15% more. We don’t get these benefits when we inhale through our mouth.
2. Breathe through your belly.
Belly breathing allows lungs to work more efficiently and allows to absorb more oxygen per breath. Belly breathing also activates Parasympathetic Nervous System. Which is a state of Autonomic Nervous System responsible for restorative and regenerative functions of the body. Being at that state our immune system works at it’s optimum capacity. If we are overwhelmed, stressed or anxious our immune functions are compromised. So at that emotional state mindful belly breathing can help to bring the physiology in a clam relaxed state of being.
3. Ratio of Exhalation and Inhalation
When our exhalation period is longer than our inhalation period our Parasympathetic Nervous system becomes dominant. Body’s restorative and immune function are at optimum state. So slow down your exhalation. Try to take 50% longer to exhale comparing to the inhalation time. Progressively increase to twice and thrice the time of inhalation period.
Please demonstrate the breathing technique with family members who are at high risk category in terms of damage from catching the virus ( e.g. anyone above 70 years old, with diabetes, asthma, heart or respiratory issues. Make sure they do it. Practice it 2/3 times a day for 5-10 minutes each time. Consider it like an exercise for your lungs and nervous system.
