we’re back i couldn’t help myself i had to tell you about the supplements we were going to have for your cholesterol right now because i know you’d want to see this video right after you watch the one on what foods you should eat to help lower your cholesterol there are three big supplements to consider i’m dr p i’m helping you eat better to feel better and feeling better in this case means taking some vitamins and supplements to help lower your cholesterol and keep your blood vessels healthy the first one is coenzyme q10 coenzyme q10 may be particularly helpful if you are also on a medication like a statin to lower your cholesterol do not stop taking your statin talk to your doctor about this but you want to add coenzyme q10 at a dose of about 90 to 120 milligrams every single day look for this at health food stores find a coenzyme q10 that you can take if you have high cholesterol and the second one is omega-3 fatty acids this is often referred to as fish oils so yes fish oils are helpful but if you’re trying to follow a plant-based diet you can also get flaxseed oil or other plant-based oils that are really high in omega-3 fatty acids and i know i covered it in the food video but walnuts are particularly high in omega-3 fatty acids so is ground flaxseed and don’t forget hemp seeds these can all get you a mega dose of omega-3s if you decide to supplement you’re going to look for one that has epa and dha they all have different doses think around 500 500 milligrams of epa 500 milligrams of dha it’s going to vary but if you take higher doses than that or supra therapeutic mega high doses it can affect your body’s ability to clot your blood so make sure you’re telling your doctor when you’re on this but find an over-the-counter flaxseed oil or fish oil supplement to help you lower your cholesterol naturally a quick time out to clarify a point here if you’re looking for fish oils or the algae oil you’ll see epa and dha right there on the bottle and can dose it that way but if you’re looking for flax seed oil you’re going to see a la on the bottle that’s alpha linoleic acid and your body will convert ala to epa and dha but only a small percentage gets converted so you’re going to see super high doses like 2 000 milligrams of ala that’s okay because only a small percent is going to be converted to epa and dha let’s continue on what video could be complete if i didn’t say vitamin d and just for a bonus i’ll say magnesium because those two things are good for blood vessel health in general and that’s what we’re looking for as it relates to your cholesterol so vitamin d is about a thousand international units a day and magnesium anywhere from 250 to 400 milligrams at night time because the bonus is it helps you sleep i hope that was super helpful
