we are going to talk about “large intestine”.
Large intestine is about 1.5 meter long, consist of the cecum , colon , and rectum.
remaining water, salt, and vitamins synthesized by bacterial action, is absorbed by the large intestine.
The content in the colon move forward slowly at a rate of 5 cm/hour.
Intestinal wall of large intestine is protected from bacterial activity, by the large secretion of mucus from mucosa.
It also provides the medium for binding the feces together.
Bicarbonate ions helps to neutralize the acidic end products produced from bacterial action.
In the large intestine, bacterial action is most intense, resulting in the formation of gases like hydrogen, carbon dioxide, nitrogen, methane , and organic acids like acetic acid, propionic acid, butyric and lactic acid.
Bacterial action may also result in the formation of toxic substances like ammonia, amines, phenolic compound.
The ordor of feces is decided some of the gases and organic acids formed during bacterial action.
Increased consumption of resistance starch , dietary fibers, which are prebiotic material , may leads to an increased microbial mass, that are thought to be beneficial for health because prebiotics materials increased the production of bifidobacteria, lactobacilli, and indegenous bacteria, which is very beneficial for health.
Colonic flora helps to ferment any carbohydrates, that is malabsorbed , or resistant to digestion.
Fermentation by colonic flora helps to covert dietary fibers into short chain fatty acids and gases.
